Why trying to walk on to a college roster is a big risk

CAPTIONS:

“The term “walk on” is one of the most misunderstood recruiting terms.

What it means is an athlete is offered a roster spot without any scholarship money. It does not mean the athlete literally just showed up on campus without the coach knowing who he or she is and gets on the team, which very rarely happens.

Athletes should not count on walking on to a college team. That is taking a big risk, even to Division 3 or NAIA schools whose rosters are vastly filled by athletes they recruited.”
