What you need to know about verbal commitments

CAPTIONS:

“The NCAA’s definition of a verbal commitment is when an athlete verbally agrees to play for a college before he or she signs or is eligible to sign a letter of intent.

The commitment is non-binding for the student-athlete AND the school.

When verbal commitments can be made vary by sport and division. Either side can back out of verbal commitments for any reason.

But when colleges ask you to make a verbal commitment, they’re typically going to honor that unless you do something to mess it up, like getting in trouble, not performing well or letting your grades slip.

If you do make a verbal commitment to a school, that ends your college search because if that school finds out that you are still searching they could pull that verbal offer to you.”
