Grace Varua is an exceptional student-athlete whose 3.9 GPA reflects her discipline, intelligence and ability to thrive in a high-performance environment. Behind the plate, she is an impactful catcher with advanced defensive tools and a strong physical skill set. Her 1.76 pop time and 71 mph overhand place her within elite recruiting standards, while her quick transfer, footwork and arm strength consistently control the running game. Grace is aggressive and vocal defensively, demonstrating command of the field and a high softball IQ in her ability to read situations and manage the game. Offensively and athletically, she combines speed, strength and agility, training daily with intent and purpose. Her versatility extends beyond catching, with proven capability at 3B and the skill set to play shortstop, highlighting her athleticism and adaptability. Competing as a 15U U.S. National Team athlete, playing varsity softball since her freshman year, and facing top-tier pitching, including experience catching D1-level arms, has accelerated her development and readiness for college.
What truly separates Grace is her mindset and leadership. Her work ethic is her defining trait – she’s relentlessly committed to improvement, putting in extra work independently to refine her hitting, catching and fielding. She embraces the challenges of a game built on failure, showing mental resilience, confidence and the willingness to take risks necessary for growth. Grace is a vocal leader who holds her teammates accountable while maintaining respect for coaches and opponents, modeling the standards of a collegiate athlete. She builds strong relationships with her pitchers, earning trust through preparation, communication and consistency. Highly coachable and mature beyond her years, she trains alongside high school and college baseball players, benefiting from a high-level training environment guided by her father, a trainer for D1 baseball. Grace approaches the game as a true student, combining strategic awareness with a competitive drive to excel under pressure. With her elite academic profile, national-level experience, leadership qualities and unwavering dedication, Grace Varua projects as a high-impact NCAA athlete with the potential to contribute immediately and develop into a cornerstone player at the collegiate level.

Grace has been with us for half a year and she has made a huge impact. The team is stronger with Grace, who’s an outstanding athlete. Her athletic skills are above average. She has great mobility, strength, versatility and is very explosive. Very good on her feet, possesses great fast-twitch reactions within all of her body movements. From a defensive standpoint, Grace is one of the best catchers I’ve had the privilege of coaching. She has keen knowledge of the field, great IQ situationally and always looks for multiple plays. Only a sophomore, she’s already at the highest college level when it comes to blocking and framing. Grace’s arm strength is one of the best in the state (1.76 average pop, 70 mph overhand), shutting down the running game.
From an offensive perspective, Grace has a ton of power. Super compact, short and strong to the ball. Due to her being a catcher, Grace has the advantage of reading pitchers which allows her to have a great approach regardless of being ahead in the count or behind. If there are runners on base, for certain Grace is making solid contact and driving them home.
When Grace is not catching, she’s our 3rd baseman. As mentioned before, Grace has great lateral movement and some of the quickest transitions out of the glove I’ve seen. Combined with great foot work, her strong arm prevents the opposing team from getting on base.
Her leadership skills are exceptional. She leads by example, vocally and with positive reinforcement. My pitchers always feel safe when Grace is behind the plate. She gives my pitchers calmness and confidence. It goes without saying, Grace defines “high-energy”. Grace is very coachable, always focused in the games/practice and always open to instruction. While she is very coachable, she’s also like having another coach in the dugout. Grace has all the athletic skills, leadership skills and an unbelievable work ethic. Grace will not get out-worked. She is always looking to improve her game and challenges herself to become a better player.
— Juan Torres, NJ UNITY ’28 Head Coach
In my 30 years of coaching softball, Grace Varua is the best catcher I have ever had the opportunity to coach. From the moment she stepped into our program as a freshman, she earned the trust to call her own pitches and manage game situations, which is something I very rarely allow at that age. She has a rare combination of fearlessness, maturity and natural feel for the game that sets her apart. Defensively, Grace is exceptional behind the plate. She is fearless in blocking and receiving, and she handles pitchers with confidence and composure. Her hands are soft, her footwork is quick and efficient, and she transitions the ball with a lightning-quick release. She posts a 1.8 pop time with accuracy, and she does it consistently in game situations. Her arm strength is exceptional and plays well against any level of competition we’ve faced. More important than the tools, she controls the game from behind the plate – she sees everything, communicates constantly and takes command of the field. She has a true understanding of game situations that is well beyond her years.
What separates Grace even further is her leadership. She is vocal, organized and decisive in how she communicates with her teammates. She consistently talks to pitchers during tough innings, helping them slow the game down and refocus. She has the respect of our entire team, not because she demands it, but because she earned it every day through her actions and presence. She leads in a calm, steady and confident way that elevates everyone around her. While catcher is her primary position, Grace has also played outstanding at 3B when needed. She did this selflessly to give other players opportunities to catch, which speaks directly to her team-first mentality. She never puts herself above what is best for the program, and she embraces whatever role helps the team succeed.
Offensively, Grace is a big-moment player. She thrives under pressure and consistently delivers in high-stakes situations. In the county semifinal, she hit 2 home runs, including a 2-run walkoff. She has a natural ability to slow the moment down when it matters most.
As for areas of growth, like many elite young catchers, continued physical development and consistency over a full season will only raise her offensive ceiling even further. Her defensive foundation is already elite, and as she continues to mature physically, she will only expand on an already high-impact skill set. Grace is one of the most coachable, hardworking, and team-oriented athletes I have ever coached. She is everything you want in a catcher and a leader.
— Frank Canning, Former Pope John XXIII HS Coach
As Grace’s hitting coach, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with her and witness firsthand the qualities that make her an exceptional athlete, student and young woman. She distinguished herself through her dedication, work ethic and willingness to learn. She consistently arrives prepared, focused and eager to improve. Whether we are working on mechanics, approach or mental aspects of the game, Grace embraces coaching and applies feedback immediately. Her commitment to continuous improvement is one of the most impressive qualities she possesses.
What truly stands out about Grace is her relentless work ethic, infectious energy and exceptional bat speed. Watching her train and compete gives me goosebumps because she possesses the same presence and intensity that I witnessed in some of the best players in the world. As a former professional catcher, I had the privilege of being up close to elite athletes throughout my career, and Grace gives me that same feeling. She is the type of hitter who immediately commands attention when she steps into the batter’s box – the kind of player opposing teams know they must be careful with because she has the ability to change a game with a single swing.
Beyond her athletic ability, Grace demonstrates outstanding character. She is respectful, accountable, and carries herself with maturity both on and off the field. She leads by example through her positive attitude, determination and support of her teammates. Grace understands that success comes through hard work and perseverance, and she consistently demonstrates those values in everything she does.
As a player, Grace has shown tremendous growth and potential. More importantly, she has developed the habits and mindset necessary to succeed in any environment. Her discipline, coachability and strong character will undoubtedly allow her to excel in academics, athletics and future professional endeavors. I recommend Grace without reservation and am confident she will be a valuable addition to any team, program or organization fortunate enough to have her.
