Evaluations

If you’re looking for an athletic linebacker who consistently impacts the game, Hudson’s Trent Smith projects as a high-upside WILL linebacker at the next level. A multi-sport varsity athlete, Smith also competes in basketball and lacrosse, standing 6’2” and 190 pounds. Smith shows a strong understanding of defensive concepts, and his ability to diagnose plays and locate the football is evident on film. From the WILL position, he plays fast, flows freely to the ball, and closes space quickly to fill gaps and finish plays.   Smith has the speed and range to pursue sideline to sideline and consistently keep plays contained on sweeps and stretch concepts, forcing the ball back inside to pursuing defenders. His athleticism and length allow him to be effective in space, and he shows the ability to disengage and make tackles in traffic. In the passing game, Smith matches up well in man coverage against running backs and tight ends, and his football IQ allows him to excel in zone coverage, where he anticipates routes and positions himself to make impactful plays.   To continue progressing to the next level, Smith will benefit from added size and strength. He has a clear development plan in place and is committed to gaining 20-30 pounds before his senior season, which will further enhance his physical presence while maintaining his speed and range.   Academically, Smith maintains a 3.5 GPA while taking AP and Honors courses. He has been recognized as a Scholar Athlete in football, basketball and lacrosse. Outside of athletics, he volunteers working with children with special needs and is employed at a local pool. — Clay Miller, ScoutU Football Scout, Clay@ScoutU.com, 216-258-2396

Message from Trent

My name is Trent Smith, and I am a 2027 recruit from Hudson HS in Ohio. I am a 6-2, 190-pound three-sport varsity athlete (football, basketball & lacrosse). I would very much like to play college football. I can play a variety of positions, with most of my experience so far being at LB, FS, WR and special teams. As a junior, I was a starting LB and our defense had 6 shutout wins for the first time since 1929. Our team had a successful season going 10-3 and making it to the third round of the OHSAA playoffs. I received Suburban League Honorable Mention for football this year and Suburban League 1st Team for lacrosse my sophomore year. My cumulative GPA is 3.53, and I plan to major in finance when I attend college.   What makes me unique is my work ethic across all three sports that I play. Football is my primary focus, so during basketball season I am working on football by lifting three days a week and speed during off days. During lacrosse season, I will be working with my trainer on muscle/weight gain, explosive velocity, and speed. I believe my football IQ separates me from others, while my situational awareness and processing speed allow me to anticipate the play quickly on the field. I have a team-first mentality, with the understanding that sometimes I need to do my job and not worry about my personal stats. I also enjoy watching film to learn my opponents’ tendencies and prepare for the game.   Academically, I’ve maintained a 3.5 GPA at Hudson High School (ranked 11th in the state) while taking AP Government and AP Environmental Science as well as honors classes (Honors Algebra II, Honors World History, Honors US History and Honors Geometry) and I have an excellent attendance record. I have been awarded as Scholar-Athlete for football, basketball and lacrosse every year. I volunteer with special needs students weekly at school and I’m helping at the LeBron James Foundation Special Olympics Leadership Summit. I attend St. Mary’s Parish, where I am a member of the Life Team program. I have volunteered at the Hudson Football and Basketball Summer Camps for the last two years. I work at my local pool during the summer.   Thank you for taking the time to review my profile and considering me for your program. I look forward to talking soon.
