Suemnick achieves dream of D1 scholarship

Patrick Suemnick had zero offers during his senior year of high school. Not long after, he had trouble keeping track of all the college coaches interested in him. And starting this fall, Suemnick will be chasing his dream of playing in March Madness.

Recently, Suemnick committed to Robert Morris University after spending 1 year at Don Bosco Prep School in Indiana. The RMU Colonials (20-14) qualified for this year’s NCAA Tournament before the event was canceled.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the NCAA Tournament, and Robert Morris proved they were a tournament-caliber team when they won the NEC championship this season,” Suemnick said. “They also just switched into the Horizon League, so I’ll get to play a few games in Green Bay (WI), the city I grew up in, and a few more games close by. Being able to play in front of my family and friends, while also having a great shot at making the NCAA Tournament, made it very easy to commit to Robert Morris University.”

Suemnick, who stands 6-foot-8 with a 32-inch vertical, always had Division I ability. During his senior season at Denmark High School, he averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks per game.

“I’m excited and grateful to play basketball at the mid-major Division I level,” Suemnick said. “During my senior year of high school, I had little interest, so if you told me that I was going to be playing D1 basketball as a freshman, it would’ve been hard to believe.”

After joining ScoutU, Suemnick received about 40 offers to play at the next level, including eight for Divisions I and II.

“It’s impossible to count the number of coaches that contacted me since enrolling in ScoutU,” Suemnick said. “I went from having no contact with coaches whatsoever to having too many to keep track of. After ScoutU got my name out there, my high school coach and I had to have a conversation about what division I was trying to go to, so we could weed out some of the coaches calling. It’s crazy, I know.”

ScoutU’s Jon Feyen first saw Suemnick play during a summer league. He recommended Scout Jason Lauren to reach out and see how his recruiting was progressing. As it turns out, Suemnick had been greatly overlooked.

“I’m so proud of Patrick,” Lauren said. “He was bound and determined to play at the NCAA Division I level. He was late in the game to get recruited by many D1s when I started helping him, but he worked his tail off to improve, went to a great prep school in Don Bosco and got the D1 scholarship he dreamed of. Patrick has the ability to hit the outside shot or blow by you for a dunk. He is a beast on the glass rebounding and is an excellent shot-blocker. With his drive to succeed, I’m sure Patrick will have a great college basketball career.”

Suemnick’s path to the next level was uncommon, but he never let anything get in his way. The only thing he was missing was a trusted partner to guide him through the complicated recruiting process.

“Jason was great!” Suemnick said. “I had a lot of questions and he had a lot of answers for them! Jason and ScoutU brought my exposure to new heights and got me in touch with coaches at the level I knew I could play at. It was a great investment that led to me getting a great scholarship.”
