Being a student-athlete isn’t just about what happens on the field. For Avery Mah, she was looking for a place that provided great support throughout her college years. Mah found all of that with her commitment to San Diego City College.

“The main thing about SDCC was the environment that the coaches have,” Mah said. “While I was on the tour with them, they really took their time to get to know me both before I arrived and while I was there. They are very caring and truly want what’s best for me. The moment I committed, I got a bunch of messages from the team congratulating me and saying they couldn’t wait to meet me. There was an immediate sense of community that made me feel welcome and part of the team.”

Mah, who brings strong defense at both 2B and catcher, also holds a 3.8 GPA in the classroom. She’s now achieved a goal that she set for herself many years ago.

“I am so excited to play softball at the collegiate level,” Mah said. “This has been my dream since I first started playing. I remember growing up watching softball on TV and dreaming of playing at that level. Now that I am here, it’s hard to believe – but it’s a dream come true. Since enrolling with ScoutU, I’ve had around 20-30 calls with many different colleges. It was exciting to talk to so many schools and learn about the opportunities they had to offer.”

Last club season with Cloverdale Fury, Mah racked up 48 hits. She also earned multiple Game MVP awards, catching the attention of ScoutU’s Susan Kemper.

“Avery is a standout student-athlete who checks every box for college coaches,” Kemper said. “As a catcher, she is a rock-solid presence on the field, bringing consistency, skill and a calm confidence to every game. It’s no surprise that her talent and character earned her a place on the San Diego roster. What stood out most about Avery’s recruiting process was her genuine love for the game and her grounded approach. She showcased her abilities with focus and determination, all while staying true to her positive personality.”

In high school, Mah was already involved with multiple AP classes, basketball, volleyball, Jazz Band and the Salvation Army. It would have been overwhelming to handle the college recruiting process on her own.

“ScoutU was very helpful for our daughter as she applied to colleges, and ultimately chose one of the offers,” Avery’s parents Chris and Zoe said. “The structure of the program, information and resources they provided took the complexity out of the process. What set ScoutU apart was Susan Kemper’s personal approach and support. She was at our local tournaments, Canadian travel tournaments, and even our U.S. tournaments, encouraging us and talking to coaches. It is great to have this level of support. Thank you, ScoutU.”
