It’s more than 1,500 miles from Vancouver to Yuma, Arizona, but Kya Yun was willing to go wherever it took to achieve her college softball dream. Recently the 2025 ScoutU prospect chose Arizona Western College, which competes in the NJCAA.
“I’m incredibly excited to have the opportunity to play in college,” Yun said. “I’ve been dreaming of this since I was young, and I’m excited to play the sport I love at the next level.”
Yun will have the opportunity to learn from a great coach, Joel Prickett, who’s won more than 700 college softball games. Prickett was named the Matadors’ new head coach last May.
“Coach Prickett made me feel super welcome and had many values that aligned with mine,” Yun said. “The facilities are great – including new dorms – and my travel coach spent her 2 years at Arizona Western as well! I’m incredibly excited to go to school in Arizona!”
Yun owns a 61 mph overhand throw that makes her an asset across the infield. Her .571 club batting average made it no surprise that she received five offers to play at the next level.
“Kya Yun is an invaluable asset to every team she joins,” ScoutU’s Susan Kemper said. “Her positivity radiates far beyond the field, permeating every aspect of her life. Kya’s genuine care for others and her unwavering determination to lead, inspire and build confidence are evident in her daily actions.”
Communicating with more than 50 college coaches, Yun had phone calls with about 15 of them. This provided her the ability to discover which program would be the best for her to contribute the next 4 years.
“While her athletic talent and elite work ethic are undeniable, what truly sets Kya apart is her ability to uplift her team through her actions, words and relentless effort,” Kemper said. “Kya embodies the spirit of a true champion, not just in sports but in life. I am confident that every coach she spoke to along this journey learned the same.”
