Junior year is often an important time during the recruiting process. Chloey Bynum had the misfortune of missing her junior season with a major injury, but she didn’t let that derail her dream. Bynum bounced back as strong as ever and recently committed to play for Milwaukee Area Technical College.
“Chloey was focused on going to a junior college, so I’m happy for her that she found a great school,” ScoutU’s Jason Lauren said. “She missed her junior year due to an ACL injury and worked hard to get back on the court. I saw her play in one of her first games back, and it looked like she hadn’t missed any time or had an injury. I think she’ll be an impact player at MATC with her speed and athleticism.”
MATC has posted back-to-back winning seasons with a combined 35-23 record. Bynum, who attends Green Bay Southwest High School in Wisconsin, will be moving about 2 hours from home.
“I really liked the coach (Arom Murrell), his passion for basketball and how he communicated with the team,” Bynum said. “He reminded me a lot of my AAU coaches. I liked the atmosphere and the connection that I observed during their games and in the locker room. MATC also has the nursing program I was looking for.”
The Stormers are gaining a quick point guard who excels at driving past defenders and finding open teammates. Bynum had three offers total, and she appreciates the rare opportunity to extend her basketball career.
“I’m very excited about playing at the next level,” she said. “It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I started to play in second grade. Since joining ScoutU, there have been many coaches who reached out to me. I don’t know the exact number, but I would say 15-25.”
Bynum’s accolades include being named to the USJN Windy City Classic All-Star Team and the Prep Hoops Top 100. But what really boosted her recruiting stock was generating awareness about her talents.
“Without ScoutU and Jason Lauren, Chloey would not have been seen by nearly as many college coaches,” her mom Lisa Bynum said. “Although there are many college coaches at AAU tournaments, there are so many players and games. The AAU tournaments provide the opportunity for coaches to observe, but if they don’t know about the player and connect ahead of time, there is a much smaller chance of being seen. The ScoutU exposures allowed Chloey to connect with schools that had the programs she was most interested in.”
