College softball coaches and players agree – if you can control the opponent’s running game, it gives you a significant advantage. Mia Buske’s 1.53 pop time will definitely be an asset to South Dakota State University, which she verbally committed to last month.

Buske, a 2024 ScoutU catcher from West Bend, Wis., has been playing softball since age 8. She’s also a threat on offense, hitting .380 with 11 extra-base hits during last summer’s club season.

“Mia has been with ScoutU since freshman year of high school,” Mia’s parents, Brian and Kim, said. “So, from the beginning of this process, (ScoutU’s) Jason Lauren has been there for Mia and us. We/Mia did not know what this process was going to look like. Jason was next to us the entire way. He helped Mia break down different regions and where she wanted to be. He provided resources for Mia on the appropriate questions to ask when the time came.”

During her freshman campaign at West Bend West H.S., Buske was voted 2nd-Team All-Conference and led the league with 43 hits. In addition to her prowess behind the plate, she also has experience playing shortstop and third base.

“Mia is an exceptional talent,” ScoutU’s Jason Lauren said. “In my 14-plus years of helping softball players with their recruiting, I haven’t seen someone with as low of a pop time as Mia. I actually had someone private message me on social media not believing that pop time. I personally took her times, and she got that number at a legit showcase event I’ve attended for years. Mia also has shown power at the plate and as she gains strength, I think the sky is the limit for her offensively.”

The Jackrabbits will be strengthening an already strong program. Over the last 3 years, SDSU posted a 100-29 record while making both the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Tournaments.

“South Dakota State is a great fit for Mia, not only for her criminal justice education but it’s also the perfect size school she was looking for,” Lauren said. “She instantly loved the school, coaches and players when she visited there.”

Buske’s talent was one factor of her recruiting success. But she also excelled thanks to ScoutU’s exposure and advising.

“Mia was able to learn about so many more schools than she even knew existed!” the Buskes said. “When September 1st came and Mia received calls from D1 coaches, she was prepared and ready to speak with them. Jason would talk with us after her visits, help break them down and look at the visit through a different lens. Jason has always been there for Mia for any questions she had and has supported her in so many ways. We are grateful to have Jason with us during this process and cannot thank him enough for making this more of a journey rather than an overwhelming experience.”
