Katelyn Matenaer posted some eye-popping numbers during her second year of high school softball, and that’s when she realized there was a chance to play at the next level.

The West Bend, Wis., native achieved that goal recently when she committed to Marian University, an NCAA Division III program in Fond du Lac, Wis.

“I am beyond excited to play softball in college,” Matenaer said. “I have been dreaming of it since sophomore year, and now I turned it into a reality. I love the coaching staff, and they were a huge part of my decision. I know that my coaches will always be there for me, even if it’s not about softball.”

After batting .418 during her freshman year, Matenaer compiled a .506 average her sophomore campaign. She struck out just seven times in 93 plate appearances, while doing plenty of damage from the leadoff spot with 10 doubles and 15 RBIs.

ScoutU’s Jason Lauren helped Matenaer get noticed by numerous schools, and he knows that more options lead to better options.

“I’m so glad that Katelyn found a college that’s a good fit for her,” Lauren said. “She was looking for a smaller school close to home, so playing for coach Tony Draves and Marian is perfect. I’m sure she will do great things at Marian.”

Matenaer received offers to play for two other programs, but decided on Marian University because of the complete college experience.

“The campus is small and everyone there is really welcoming,” she said. “I will be able to get to know and connect with my teachers more than just inside the classroom. No other college gave me the presence of home like Marian did. It will be my home away from home.”

The recruiting process can be difficult and complicated, so Matenaer is grateful that she didn’t have to go through it alone.

“Jason Lauren was always there for me if I ever had any questions,” she said. “It felt really nice that I had an extra hand helping me achieve my dream. Thanks to ScoutU, I was able to connect with three colleges on a very high level, and make my decision to continue softball at Marian. I wouldn’t have been able to connect as fast as I did with Coach Draves without the help of Jason and ScoutU.”
