Evaluations

5-foot-6, 130 pounds. Catcher/infield utility. Strong arm (65-68 mph infield; 1.75-1.85 pop). Athletic catcher. Can throw to 2nd from knees. Solid at blocking (keeps ball in front). Often gets close calls with framing. Communicates well behind plate. Working to improve throwing accuracy. Leadoff or middle-of-order hitter. Rarely strikes out. Has pop at plate (5 HR as freshman). Quick hands (74 mph exit) allow to excel vs. high-velocity pitchers. Makes solid contact and rarely swings and misses. Working on improve pitch selection, improve power in legs and laying off riseballs. At SS/3B, takes good angles, can throw on the run, covers bag well, makes good tags, good range. More experience at 3B (started SS recently). Excellent base runner (takes extra base if OF doesn’t play it cleanly). Leader (cheers in dugout). Very coachable. Outstanding student (5.0 weighted GPA with AP/Honor courses).

Message from Gianna

My name is Gianna Phillips and I am a 2025 grad at Lane Technical College Prep in Chicago, IL. I am a 5-foot-6, 130-pound catcher and infield utility player for the Chicago Cheetahs 16U-Coronado team. I take pride in my academic achievements with a 5.0 weighted GPA, taking honors and AP courses throughout high school. My desired college major is undecided, but I hope to find my passion before high school ends. I take pride in the effort I put in both on the field and in the classroom, with a constant hard-working attitude and a strive to improve at every chance given. Something unique about me as an athlete is my consistency both offensively and defensively. On defense, I have a high overhand throwing velocity at 67 mph and a 1.70 second pop time that makes me stand out. On offense, I have consistent solid contact (74 mph exit) that solidifies my spot at the top of my team’s lineup. During my sophomore year, I made 3rd-Team All-State (.475 BA, 1.422 OPS, 9 HR, 56 RBI).

Outside of what is expected from me I always put in the extra work and reps. I hit and take ground balls almost every day, and I never decline the opportunity to catch bullpen for my pitchers. I work out 2-3 times a week, focusing on agility and gaining strength to be at my peak performance always. I put in an effort both on the field and in the classroom, challenging myself with rigorous honors and AP courses that help me to excel academically. I take pride in my ability to give back to my community and be a leader to those around me. I have done multiple acts of volunteer work around my community, and I am a part of the Chicago Cheetahs Building Strong Women Leaders program, which helps me teach and work with younger softball players, as well as learn from those older than me at the collegiate level.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about me!
