Derek Watry

My name is Derek Watry, and I am a 2028 graduate of St. Francis Xavier HS in Appleton, Wisconsin. As a dedicated student-athlete, I balance a rigorous academic schedule with a competitive golf season. I currently maintain a 3.9 unweighted GPA while enrolled in multiple honors and AP courses.   During my freshman season, I earned a spot on varsity and finished the summer ranked #14 in Wisconsin’s Class of 2028. A defining moment of my season was the two-day tournament at Lawsonia Links (#13 ranked course in WI). I shot an 87 during a challenging first round, but showed my mental resilience by bouncing back with a 72 in the second round. I ended my season with a 78 scoring average, including one tournament win and four top-5 finishes.   As a competitor, my work ethic is very important and a main focus of mine. I train at least five days/week, working closely with my instructor, Marcus Holtz, to refine my mechanics and course management. During Wisconsin winters, I continue to train and keep my game sharp by using an indoor putting green and a heated hitting shed. Outside of my competitive golf life, I work at my local golf course and assist a junior golf program at the country club, which allows me to share my passion for golf with younger players. Outside of golf, I am a member of my high school basketball team, and I also complete at least 20 service hours annually in my community.   I am looking for a university that will fit me academically and athletically, and I’m committed to being a player who will positively contribute to a team culture.
