In recent years, transferring schools has become much more common in college athletics. Jake Linaker is the latest ScoutU prospect to find a new home with his commitment to Montreat College, an NAIA program in North Carolina.

“The coaching staff and community that I met on my visit made me feel comfortable going there,” Linaker said. “I also got the feeling that Coach Barringer believes in me and my abilities. After my junior college, I wasn’t sure I would get another opportunity, so I am ecstatic that I get to continue my sport and academics.”

In 24 games last year at North Central Michigan College, Linaker played 9 minutes per game but shot 48% on three-pointers. His jumper and his size led to double-digit coaches recruiting him.

“At 6-foot-9 with range, Jake immediately jumps off the page,” ScoutU’s Wes Morgan said. “He fits the mold of a modern stretch 4, or even a tall wing, depending on how he moves. That versatility makes him plug-and-play across systems. He makes it easy for coaches to envision him in multiple roles. He’s too quick for traditional bigs, and too tall for guards to contest his shot effectively.”

Morgan originally evaluated Linaker in the Western Australia Basketball League. There Linaker was a reliable contributor with 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks per game.

“Jake was professional and responsive during conversations with coaches – asking smart questions and showing genuine interest in their programs,” Morgan said. “It definitely left a strong impression. Coaches notice when players are thoughtful about their decisions. Jake has good guidance but also took ownership of his recruitment. That shows maturity and readiness for the next level.”

Linaker joins a Montreat squad coming off a 19-11 season. The Cavaliers, who topped 100 points four times last year, should be a great fit for his exciting style of play.

“We had been through the recruiting process with another organization for our eldest child, and it just was not that good of an experience,” Jake’s parents said. “When Wes Morgan approached us, we were a little skeptical – but that skepticism was totally unfounded. The journey with ScoutU has been great, and they’ve supported Jake throughout. Wes was in touch regularly over the whole journey and very active in supporting Jake to fulfill his U.S. college basketball goals.”
